About the Artist: For more than half a century, the paintings of Symon Cowles have offered an uncommon view of the commonplace. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and prized by private and corporate collectors. In recent times his work has gained important recognition. In 2004, Mr. Cowles’ painting, “The Great American Icon: Baseball”, was accepted into the permanent collection of Contemporary American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.
An Exhibiting Artist Member of The National Arts Club in New York City, Mr. Cowles’ paintings have won a number of awards. In January, 2007 he was awarded First Prize for his still lfe, “Syntax,” and another award for a landscape, “Fire Island Revisited”. In March, 2009 “Bountiful,” won the President’s Award at the 110th juried Exhibition. In 2011 his still life, “Mélange.” was selected by the judges for a prize. And, in the exhibition in 2013, the pastel painting, “Finestra di Luce (Window Light)” was selected for the Herman Margulies‘ Memorial Award. Mr. Cowles has also exhibited his work in a many solo and group exhibitions including two retrospective shows in the art gallery of The Union League Club in New York city. Early in his career Mr. Cowles studies took him to The Art Students League in New York and The Yard School of Art in New Jersey.
He has also had guidance and inspiration from the noted Italian artist, Walter Lazzaro, in Milan, Italy. With a blend of reality and imagination his work is marked by an unfettered approach that encourages traditional subjects to be depicted in a contemporary style, and elements of modern life to be shown in a classical form. His strongest influences are the 17th century Dutch masters and the current Contemporary Realists in the 21st century.
