The Selig Manufacturing Co was at the cutting edge of contemporary furniture during the mid 20th century.
Selig Furniture was founded by Mendell Selig and Samuel Wexler in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1931. By the 1950s the company had grown to become one of America's leading importers and producers of contemporary furniture under the guidance of Samuel's son Robert.
The company focused on the high end designs being produced in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Their product range epitomized the simple, elegant and airy forms typical of post-war Danish furniture design.
Selig is responsible for introducing many of the Scandinavian master designers to the American public and popularising the forward-focused modern interior style that became prevalent in the States during the post-war era.
At it's peak Selig had five American factories and CEO Robert Wexler was knighted by the Italian government for his contribution to the furniture industry. In the 1970's the company was purchased by mattress producer Simmons.
